Leadership Coaching: The Disciplines, Skills and Heart of a Christian Coach

If you've been in the coaching profession for a while, you already know that there are all kinds of "free" educational resources out there. And you've noticed that many of them are disappointing, promising fantastic results but failing to give you the information you need to get those results unless you buy into their coaching, training or marketing program. I don't know about you, but I am "bootstrapping' my coaching practice. That means I need to keep a close eye on expenses and make sure the training I invest in delivers results. I purchased this book because it was required reading for my Christian Coaching Certification.

I checked out the author's background. He's a Christian coach that has trained many other Christian coaches, helped found an international coaching school and developed materials used to train Christian coaches around the world. Tony writes in simple, conversational language and teaches coaching skills that can be directly applied to your practice.

The book starts by exploring the nature of coaching and the "heart" of a coach. For many of us, this is a review of fundamental principles, but it never hurts to be reminded of the fundamentals. Tony is unafraid to discuss the importance of listening and discerning God's influence while coaching. This is part of the core of a healthy client-coach relationship-we should always be careful not to interfere with the way in which God is working in our client's life.

The book goes on to illustrate specific models of the coaching conversation. gives specific guidance on how to establish a healthy coaching relationship, and explores what Tony calls the coaching funnel. Throughout the book, Tony includes practice exercises, sample questions and personal stories to illustrate his main points. This style of presenting information makes it easy and enjoyable to understand the book and apply its teachings in your coaching practice.

No, it's not free, but it's a real bargain that will give you lots of information you can use immediately along with lessons that you can meditate on and grow into as your coaching skills develop.
